How We Research and Review Restaurant Operations Content

Restaurant Operator Lab uses an operator-first editorial process: define the control, verify the logic, state assumptions, test the calculation, and make the final guidance usable in a real restaurant.

How topics are selected

We prioritize recurring operating problems faced by independent restaurant owners, managers and kitchen teams: food cost, inventory, labor, purchasing, production, cash control, menu decisions, maintenance, catering, bakery operations and restaurant technology. Search demand can help identify a question, but usefulness to an operator remains the deciding factor.

How calculations are checked

Formulas are reviewed for unit consistency, division-by-zero risk and whether the result is being labeled correctly. Worked examples are illustrative unless the page explicitly identifies an external benchmark. We do not present an invented percentage as a universal restaurant standard.

How sources are selected

When a claim depends on regulation, safety guidance, legal requirements, public statistics or an external standard, we prefer primary or authoritative sources such as government agencies, recognized standards bodies and original provider documentation. Vendor material may be used to describe a vendor feature, but it should not be treated as independent evidence of industry performance.

Operational judgment versus sourced fact

Many restaurant-management decisions depend on the operation. We distinguish practical operating frameworks from externally verifiable facts. A checklist can be useful without pretending that one workflow is legally required everywhere. Food-safety, employment, tax, accounting and legal requirements must be checked for the operator’s jurisdiction.

Updates and corrections

Pages may be updated when formulas, source information, examples, tools or editorial standards change. Material calculation or factual errors should be corrected rather than left in place for consistency.

To report an error, email editorial@restaurantoperatorlab.com with the page title, the passage or figure in question and, when available, the source you believe should be checked.

Editorial byline

Articles published under Restaurant Operator Lab Editorial Team are produced under this shared editorial standard rather than being presented as the personal opinion of a named individual. The byline does not imply legal, accounting, tax, employment or food-safety certification.

Tools and templates

Calculators and templates are decision-support resources. They are tested for their stated formula and validation rules, but the user remains responsible for supplying correct inputs and deciding whether the output is appropriate for the restaurant’s own operating model.
